Hotwire Versus Priceline: Which is Better?

Hotwire and Priceline both offer some of the best online discounts available-particularly when you use their most robust discount programs-the ones that do not give you the name of your airline, hotel, or car rental provider until after you pay.

To find out which company is better, we sent Rick Archer, president of SearchSummit, to talk with Don Nadeau, the president of BidonTravel. Don Nadeau, a long-time budget travel expert, has worked extensively with both companies, and knows their pros and cons.

Which is better, Hotwire or Priceline?

They’re both excellent, but not identical. I prefer one over the other depending on my needs at the time.

Well, which one is best for discount hotel rooms?

The question of the location or neighborhood of your hotel spells one difference between Priceline and Hotwire.

With either company, you pick the price, quality, amenities, and neighborhood you want, but not a specific hotel. For example, with Priceline’s Name Your Own Price service, you can bid on a 4-star hotel in Priceline’s North Michigan Avenue district in Chicago. When your bid’s accepted, you find out the hotel name.

Because it wants you to have a winning hotel bid, Priceline’s neighborhoods tend to be large with lots of hotels in your price range.

In contrast, when using Hotwire, you don’t bid on your hotel. Prices are displayed.

Hotwire can use smaller neighborhoods because it’s not concerned with you having a winning bid. This makes it easier to pinpoint the location you want. For instance, Hotwire currently divides Priceline’s North Michigan Avenue neighborhood into two neighborhoods.

Then why use Priceline for hotels?

Priceline may be cheaper.

You can easily find out Hotwire’s price, and then bid a bit lower on Priceline. If your bid is accepted, you’ll enjoy a lower price for a similar quality hotel or even the same hotel.

In addition, Priceline has relationships with a greater number of hotels and with hotels in more cities than Hotwire does, which may mean a lower price for your trip.

You mentioned picking the quality. Whose hotel rating system do you trust the most?

Hotwire and Priceline star quality ratings are similar to AAA auto club diamond ratings. At times, both companies increase or decrease star rankings based on customer input. Although their hotels are not always ranked the same, I can’t say one system is better than the other, as both are so driven by customer experiences.

You’ll probably end up happier if you book higher ranked hotels-getting a 4-star hotel for a 2-star price, instead of a 2-star one for a 1-star price.

Which site gives you more information about its hotels before you pay?

Hotwire does. It includes helpful information such as the availability of airport transfers and whether or not you’ll be right on the beach. However, neither let’s you know some basic information, such as if pets are welcome.

What about their hotel price guarantees?

Many Internet sites guarantee hotel prices, but specifically exclude guarantees on the types of deep …

Getting The Cheapest Possible Airline Tickets

For most people, trying to get a good rate on airfare is a necessity. Most people spend the bulk of their vacation dollars on airfare. So it’s a good idea to put in the time necessary to finding a better deal.

There are a few things to keep in mind while you’re researching that will save you a good bit of money. So these tips will help with getting better prices.

Be as flexible as you can

If you can leave a few days earlier or later, you can often save significantly, because cheaper tickets may still be available on a less popular day. Try to avoid the days most business people like to travel. For example, Tuesdays and Wednesdays can be much less expensive days to fly than any other day.

Look into consolidated airline tickets

Consolidators buy tickets in bulk and sell them at a discounted rate to help airlines fill seats up. You can find ticket consolidators in your newspaper’s travel section or online at sites like Hotwire.

You should be aware of the fact that consolidated airline tickets have more restrictions than others, but could be a really good buy if you’re willing to live with those restrictions. It’s best to find out what those restrictions are so you’ll know if you’d like to go that route or not.

Be aware of hidden costs

Ticket prices are often published without ticketing fees, airport taxes, security surcharges, etc., which can raise your costs by 10 to 20 percent. Know these fees before you buy your tickets to avoid any surprise. Read all fine print before giving up your money. It can mean the difference in getting a really good hotel or a cheap motel.

Check out ticket prices online

Ticket prices can be less than 10 percent or more if you purchase them online. Several online travel websites also offer package deals for vacations that include flights, so be sure to shop around and prices vary from website to website.

If you need cheap airline tickets, these tips work pretty well, as well as the other tips you can find online. The trick is to take the time to research well before you buy the tickets. You can often get good prices if you take your time finding out what’s available.…

5 Steps to Easy Online Flight Booking

The internet has changed virtually everything.  Air travel is no exception.  It used to be that a good travel agent was the best way to plan and book your flight.  Now, thanks to the World Wide Web, you can make your travel plans from the comfort and convenience of your home computer.  Some people are hesitant to make bookings online because of security issues and their lack of familiarity with the whole process of online booking.  Here are a few things you can do to make your experience as trouble-free as possible.

1. Be flexible.  The majority of air travel done in the United States is for business or professional reasons.  Individuals who are traveling for business reasons tend to be less flexible in their travel dates and arrival/departure times.  However, if you are traveling for pleasure (vacation, holidays, etc…) you might be able to save some money by being flexible in a few key areas.  The first area you should be flexible in is your departing airport.  If you live in an area that only has one local airport you might not have a choice which airport you depart from.  But if you live in a large city there are usually two or three airports within driving distance from your home that you could depart from.  Be sure to check the prices of flights leaving from all airports within your area.  Keep in mind, the biggest airport might not be the cheapest.  Second, be flexible in your dates and times of departure.  Flights are typically cheaper that depart on weekdays as opposed to weekends or Fridays.  Also, overnight flights are in lower demand and are therefore less expensive.

2. Book in advance.  Last minute bookings are always the most expensive.  Airlines charge more money for last minute bookings because they cause more work for the airlines to process in time.  Try to book your flight four to six weeks ahead of time.  Many airlines will allow you to book earlier than that, but some airlines do not publish their flight itineraries until six weeks before the departure date.

3. Have your credit card information ready.  Online bookings are paid for exclusively with credit or debit cards.  Be sure to check and see which cards are accepted with the company you are making your online booking with.  Also, be sure that their site is protected from identity theft by companies such as VeriSign or Travel Guard.

4. Be sure to provide accurate information.  Websites can only process what you put into them.  If you do not provide accurate information for an online booking agency they can not process your purchase.  Be sure that your name, email address, flight information, and credit card information are all filled out accurately.

5. Confirm your purchase.  Many online booking agencies provide a phone number or support email address on their website so that you can confirm that your purchase was made.  Take five minutes to call or email the agency to make sure that …

Is Vacation Travel to Mexico Safe?

With all the recent bad press regarding drug traffic related gang crimes in Mexico, one has to wonder if that Mexico vacation is still safe.

Peter Diaz, President of VoyageMonkey.com Online Travel, compares travel to Mexico with any travel within the United States.  Simply stated, “We all generally don’t take vacations to bad parts of Oakland California or South Central Los Angeles, yet we regularly hear about drug related crimes, gang violence and murders taking place right here in our own backyards.”  Yet we don’t question if travel in the United States is safe.

The facts are that travel to such popular Mexican destinations as Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, Cancun and other tourist spots in Mexico is generally safe.  Most of the Mexican crimes in the press have been in the border towns and some of the larger cities.  Victims are generally other gang members and authorities.  Statistically this is not unusual when compared to the United States.  The press has capitalized on these stories, as is expected.  The event becomes a story and every news network puts their own spin on it, for days, or weeks, or months.

Several years ago a young woman named Natalee Holloway was murdered in Aruba and the press capitalized on it.  Diaz says “Aruba is one on the safest places to travel to in the Caribbean.  I would not think twice about vacationing in Aruba.”  The Natalee Holloway story was rare to Aruba, but travel to Aruba was affected.  The Natalle Holloway story still receives some press.

Another recent story involved a young girl on a cruise ship that was sexually assaulted.  Unfortunately, the young girl was allowed to wander the ship alone, unsupervised, in this floating city of 3,000 people.  Something parents generally don’t allow back at home.  The event turned into stories about how United States laws don’t protect cruise ship passenger and how cruise lines will not properly investigate and report crimes.  The cruise industry was attacked by the press and the safety of all cruise ships was questioned.  Travelers were asking if cruise ships were safe.

These stories should remind us as travelers that we should always be alert and stay out of risks way at home and abroad.   When traveling anywhere, using good common sense will keep you safe.  Always keep your children in your sight.  Stay in resort hotels and keep to the tourist areas.  Don’t walk alone at night (take a cab), don’t accept rides with questionable transportation, and always keep the alcohol consumption down and stay away from illegal drugs.  Going out drinking and clubbing at night always carries some risks.  Leave the Rolex watch and the flashy bling bling at home.

Mexico has some great travel destinations, excellent beaches, and the dollar is strong against the peso.  Travel to Mexico is down so the deals are really good.  We say, take that Mexico vacation and enjoy yourself.  Any of the destinations that have been developed as resort areas will be safe.  The local …

Finding Cheap International Air Fare

Many people spend a good part of their life dreaming of visiting foreign lands. Their vision of visiting exotic places and meeting new people is always there but for one little problem in the back of their mind: The Cost. How on earth are they going to pay for such a trip? There’s so much planning and cost involved and just when they think they have it figured out the problem of paying just to get there raises its ugly head. If they could just find a cheap international air fare all the pieces would fall into place.

Of course what is cheap for one person may not be for another so in a sense this can be a subjective issue. But the fact remains that finding a good deal requires the same research tactics no matter who you are, it just up to the individual to decide whether the price they found is a good deal for them.

Because air fare prices are quite volatile and can change daily it can pay big savings to get as many different price quotes as possible. The point of this is simple, with so many airlines and travel sites vying for your travel dollars your chances of finding a deal are greatly enhanced if you can check all your options. Which options should you keep your eye out for? Here are some tips and trick to help you find a cheap international air fare.

One of the biggest ways to save on international flights is to travel during the off-peak seasons. During the height of peak vacation season airlines charge a high premium for their flights because the demand is there. Do a little research into your chosen destination and find out when the off-peak season is and chances are you will find some pretty good ticket deals.

You can also save money if you buy your tickets far enough in advance of your travel date, or at least to a point. If you try to purchase a ticket on an international flight more than 4 months before the flight you will most likely be charged the premium rate for that seat. The best time to look for cheap air fares are between 4 months out up around 14 to 21 days before you’re scheduled to leave. Airlines normally raise their prices significantly 14 days before a flight because by then most people who are traveling are set in their plans and will pay the premium price.

A last couple things to consider are flying into an alternate airport or trying one of the many discount airlines that are now starting to fly international flights. These are two more ways to save money when flying internationally.

Finding cheap international air fare can be done, you just have to do your research and know where to look. Once you know these things you will find you can travel and save money at the same time.…
